“We’re very alert to the fact that things will fail,” said Simon McNamara, chief administrative officer at British bank NatWest. “If 10 organisations aren’t prepared and are connected into one provider that disappears, then we’ll all have a problem.”

‘Rapid Pace’

The EU proposed in September that “critical” external services for the financial industry such as the cloud should be regulated to strengthen existing recommendations on outsourcing from the bloc’s banking authority that date back to 2017.

The Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee (FPC) meanwhile wants greater insight into agreements between banks and cloud operators, and the Bank of France told lenders last month they must have a written contract that clearly defines controls over outsourced activities.

“The FPC is of the view that additional policy measures to mitigate financial stability risks in this area are needed,” it said in July.

The European Central Bank, which regulates the biggest lenders in the Euro zone, said on Wednesday that bank spending on cloud computing rose by more than 50 percent in 2019 from 2018.

And that’s just the start. Spending on cloud services by banks globally is forecast to more than double to $85 billion (roughly Rs. 6,32,293 crores) in 2025 from $32.1 billion (roughly Rs. 1,38,799 crores) in 2020, according to data from technology research firm IDC shared with Reuters.

An IDC survey of 50 major banks globally identified just six primary providers of cloud services: IBM, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Alibaba, and Oracle.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) — the largest cloud provider according to Synergy Group — posted sales of $28.3 billion (roughly Rs. 2,10,530 crores) in the six months to June, up 35 percent on the prior year and higher than its annual revenue of $25.7 billion (roughly Rs 1,91,188 crores) as recently as 2018.

While all industries have ramped up cloud spending, analysts told Reuters that financial services firms had moved faster since the pandemic after an explosion in demand for online banking and emergency lending schemes.

“Banks are still very diligent but they have gained a higher level of comfort with the model and are moving at a fairly rapid pace,” said Jason Malo, director analyst at consultants Gartner.

Separately, Xiaomi is found to be working on another model, the Redmi 10 Prime, in addition to the regular Redmi 10. The Redmi 10 Prime could be specifically designed for the Indian market.

Xiaomi’s official account on Twitter has confirmed the presence of the MediaTek Helio G88 on the Redmi 10. The chipset comes as an upgrade to the Helio G85 that the Taiwanese chipmaker had launched last year. The successor includes two cores of ARM Cortex-A75 and six cores of Cortex-A55 — with a maximum clock speed of 2GHz. There is also support for a 90Hz display, LPDDR4x RAM of up to 8GB, and eMMC 5.1 storage. MediaTek has paired the Helio G88 with an ARM Mali-G52 MC2 GPU that comes with a maximum frequency of 1GHz.

The presence of the MediaTek Helio G88 SoC was spotted alongside other details about the Redmi Note 10 on an official blog post that Xiaomi briefly published last week. Some recent rumours also suggested the same chipset on the upcoming Redmi phone.

In addition to the teaser confirming the MediaTek chipset, tipster Mukul Sharma has posted a couple of screenshots from the IMEI database of the GSM Association (GSMA). It suggests that Xiaomi has the Redmi 10 Prime in development alongside the vanilla Redmi 10.

The Redmi 10 Prime that allegedly appeared on the IMEI database has the model number 21061119BI. The last letter of the model number suggests that the phone is an Indian variant as Xiaomi normally brings its global phone versions with the letter “G” in their model numbers, while the China-specific models have the ”C” suffixed to the number.

Xiaomi has not yet officially revealed the exact details about the Redmi 10. It is also unclear whether the Redmi 10 Prime is coming alongside the Redmi 10. However, given the amount of teasers, the company seems to be in plans to expand its Redmi portfolio with new smartphones soon.

American micro-blogging and social networking service Twitter has halted its account verification programme, saying that it needs to work on the application and review process that lets people into the blue check mark club.

As per The Verge, this change, where Twitter will not be letting new people apply for verification, is coming after the platform admitted that several fake accounts, which reportedly seemed to be part of a botnet, were incorrectly verified.

If you have recently applied for verification, there is a chance you’ll get it — Twitter Verified has said that it’ll still be reviewing existing applications, so the freeze is just preventing new people from being able to apply.

In other words, if you were able to apply before, Twitter’s lead says you still can. Twitter hasn’t indicated that it’ll be making changes to the criteria that it uses to deem accounts as verifiable or not.

A Twitter spokesperson told The Verge that it would “resume rolling out applications in the next few weeks.”

This isn’t the first time Twitter has paused its verification programme. It put the public process on hold in 2017, after it received backlash for verifying one of the organisers behind the Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville.

It brought back a revamped version in 2021 and paused it a week later due to an avalanche of requests.

The start-stop issues Twitter has been having with its Verified programme speak to the difficulties that can come with issuing a badge that is sometimes regarded by users as an endorsement.

Tech giant Google is rolling out its in-phone recording feature – Google Phone app call recorder — to Pixel users in more markets around the world.

According to Mashable, the recorder, which was launched in the US last year for a select bunch of users, is finally coming to more countries.

The primary reason behind the rollout, as per Mashable is the legal limitations in some regions where call recording without the contact’s prior consent is illegal.

The Google Phone app is available on the Google Play store. A report from 9to5Google stated that the feature will be rolling out globally “as a server-side update” and that “some people in India already have the feature.”

Mashable quoted 9to5Google’s report that states the update will come to “countries with loose call recording laws, which includes a bunch of other countries given only one side of the conversation needs to consent to record a call legally.”

After the feature will release, there will be a new ‘call recording’ sub-section that would be available in the app’s settings, where the users could change how soon they want to auto-delete their recordings or never delete them.
