Jordanian travel simply sounds fascinating. You have the perfect Middle Eastern family vacation when you include a trip to Jordan with children!
At first, we were thrilled at the prospect of trekking across the border and into Jordan from Israel. We welcome any opportunity to travel overland. That plus the prospect of actually visiting the magnificent Petra, one of the Wonders of the World that isn’t as well-known or well-publicized, at least in the area where we grew up.

The desert and its miles-long array of vivid colors captivated us. Additionally, we were hoping to get a taste of Bedouin culture. (From New Zealand, it couldn’t feel much farther!).
I wanted to ask the following questions before we left. and all the information you require for a family vacation with children in Jordan.
What makes traveling to Jordan with children so unique?
Jordan is a fantastic place to take children. Aside from its history and natural beauty, Jordan’s people are hospitable and pleasant, and its diverse geography allows kids to explore and fully immerse themselves.
Jordan’s weather isn’t too harsh for families to travel comfortably. Additionally, Jordanian cuisine isn’t overly hot or flavorful.
And meeting people in Jordan is quick. The boys were riding a donkey with the neighborhood kids before we had even made our homestay.
When is the ideal time of year to travel to Jordan?
Jordan’s scenery is so diverse that there is something for everyone throughout the year.
Wadi Rum, Petra, and Amman are all more than 800 meters above sea level, whereas the Dead Sea is only 400 meters below.
But I’m willing to bet that if you’re thinking about taking your kids to Jordan, you probably aren’t hoping for a quiet week of relaxing by the Red Sea (sorry) in the blazing sun.
In that scenario, spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) are the ideal seasons to visit Jordan in terms of weather.
Reaching Jordan
Using a Jordan Pass that we had previously acquired, we crossed the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge from Israel into Jordan with children. You can read my comprehensive guide to our experience crossing the border—which included the worst noise ever—here.
Destinations and our schedule for Jordan with children
Amman
Amman has been the political and cultural hub of Jordan since the Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1946. Because it was the location of ancient Byzantine and Roman civilizations, the city has a rich history. However, it has a contemporary buzz and is simple for travelers to navigate.
The traffic was the largest obstacle to exploring Amman. You can trust me when I say that driving around roundabouts in a rented car during rush hour is not a pleasant experience.
Petra
One of the most unique (wonderful) destinations on earth is Petra Petra, the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom.
Before breakfast, it took us an hour to hike in (and we covered 11km over the day). Even though there weren’t many people around, the daybreak at The Monastery was breathtakingly beautiful. We sat sipping Bedouin mint tea while the children played in the sand, doing our best to appreciate this wonder of the world.
