The newly formed BCB has yet to reveal the name of the chairman and secretary of the BPL Governing Council (GC). Betpro online has been buzzing with speculation about these appointments.
Therefore, the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League, set to start on December 27, is surrounded by mystery and ambiguity.
Sheikh Sohel and Ismail Haider Mallick departed the country after the Awami League government collapsed, leaving these two positions unfilled.
The board announced that it would attempt to organize the player draft on October 14; thus, it is already in a race against time. However, 72 hours before the tournament, it finds itself in the awkward position of having to authenticate the names of the seven participating teams and appoint the two new GC members.
Three of the teams who participated in the previous season have left the league; the four-time BPL champion Comilla Victorians and Durdanto Dhaka both decided to withdraw from the BPL.
The Chattogram Challengers’ officials contend that Faruque Ahmed, the new board president, needed to provide them with an equal opportunity to compete.
Even though the BCB CEO has met with several prospective new owners and some established ones, it is believed that the team’s participation list still needs to be determined because some still need to make the necessary funds to compete.
Mortaza was ranked in the draft’s Grade B.
According to the official player list, Mashrafe Mortaza, a former national captain, is ranked in Grade B of the player’s draft. The 41-year-old Mortaza hasn’t played in any significant cricket competitions and took a hiatus midway through the BPL season of the previous year to concentrate on his political duties in front of the January national election.
BCB authorities maintained that the renowned cricket player could be placed in at least Grade B. Therefore, they put him in Grade B as a sign of respect. He continued by saying that, if necessary, the board might alter the players’ category one or two times.
All-rounder Muhammad Saifuddin, a key player in Fortune Barishal’s victory the previous season, has been categorized as C. After taking 15 wickets in the home series against Zimbabwe, Saifuddin was added to the T20I team.
However, the team management chose Tanzim Sakib over the right-arm pacer; hence, the latter did not make the T20 World Cup roster.
It has been discovered that Saifuddin has discussed his downgrading from the players category—he was ranked in Grade B in the most recent BPL edition—with a selection panel member.
In addition to Saifuddin, bowlers like Abu Haider Rony, Khaled Ahmed, and Ebadot Hossain have also been ranked lower on the players’ list than Mortaza. Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, and Zakir Hasan are among those who fall into Category C.
For the draft, 188 players have been divided into six groups. Twenty-two cricketers are in Category C, while twelve are in Categories A and B. There are 28, 51, and 63 cricketers in categories D, E, and F, respectively.
The maximum price cap for players in Category A is Tk 60 lacs. In that order, the highest price cap for the following categories will be Tk 40 lacs, Tk 25 lacs, Tk 20 lacs, Tk 15 lacs, and Tk 10 lacs.
